Western Iowa Tech strives to be at the forefront of innovative educational programs, but in the town of Sioux City, money can be a huge challenge for students. While every student is provided with a laptop, not every student can afford their learning materials. President Terry Murrell was determined to find an affordable, flexible solution to bridge the gap. This is why he partnered with Cengage Unlimited for Institutions (CUI). With CUI, Western Iowa Tech was able to provide every student with online access to the quality learning materials and online platforms needed for their courses on day one, for one low subscription price, ensuring that no one would be left behind.
By decreasing over 85% of textbook costs, graduation rates nearly tripled. With increased access to learning materials, Murrell improved overall success for both the students and the school. In 2011, Western Iowa Tech had a graduation rate of just 17%. It has since risen to 42.5%―ranking the Iowa community college as fourth in the state for graduation rate. 1
